Chapter 4: How to Intimidate People to Get Your Way
Never underestimate the power of intimidation. Intimidation is your number one tool to getting your way in life. Intimidation enables you to make other people give up before they even try to challenge you. It gives you an edge over the competition and commands the awe and respect of those around you. Being intimidating is a natural skill that you have, but you may repress it because you are scared or you are “nice.” Learn to believe in yourself and use your natural confidence to intimidate others freely.
Also, disregard the common misconception that intimidating equals threatening. You can be intimidating while still being friendly, open, and enthusiastic. You can appear like a nice person while still intimidating others. There is no need to be mean or have attitude. In fact, being threatening indicates that you are overcompensating for a lack of confidence and that you feel you must be mean to win because you have nothing else to win with.
Believe in Yourself
The first step to intimidating others is to have an unshakable aura of confidence and self-pride. When you believe in yourself, you don’t let others shake you or get inside your head. This manifests in how you present yourself and how you act. It becomes obvious to others that you are someone to take seriously. You can intimidate your opponent very easily when you prove that you have lots of self-worth and you refuse to be toppled down or shaken.
A person with no confidence shows it. He won’t make eye contact. He won’t voice his opinions. He slouches and even tries to hide in social situations. Or he acts boastful and big, but his voice is shaky and his laugh is nervous. He doesn’t follow up his boasts with real actions. When you stare him down or challenge him, he is quick to back down and let you win.
You want to act the opposite of an unconfident person if you want to be intimidating. But the only you can do that is if you have true confidence. Otherwise, it will quickly become apparent that you don’t believe in yourself. Your confidence will quickly become rattled by more skilled and confident intimidators who see through your ruse and think that your attempts to be intimidating are silly and even comical. So it is best to eliminate fears and believe that you are capable and that you deserve to win. Believe that you have abilities and skills that give you an advantage and a very real shot at winning.
Don’t Be Shy about Who You Are
Holding back and being shy denotes a lack of confidence in Western society. You want to be open and proud about your abilities. Being boastful is a sign that you lack true confidence, but being genuinely proud of yourself is actually very intimidating. You want to show off what you have and you want to have real evidence of your abilities to back up what you claim. Don’t make a fool of yourself by bragging about things that you don’t really have or know.
